There are so many diverse kinds of sustainable businesses out there owned by people of color. Unfortunately, I didn’t always know this BUT once I did I knew it was something too good to keep to myself. With a few months of research, a lot of trial and error, I launched A.Y.O. Business Finder to the world as a free search engine that can help people find BIPOC-owned sustainable businesses easier than ever.

A part of me being the ultimate hype woman for BIPOC-owned sustainable businesses, I started the Biz Highlights series on IG Live for people to meet the person behind the business. A chance to learn the business origin story, the latest news on products and services, and get questions answered in real time. Although I love doing these IG Lives I learned not everyone loves IG Lives so I provided this blog version, so you can still meet these incredible business owners!

Can you tell us a little about yourself? Your background? Your culture?

My name is Vanessa, I am 27 years old. I grew up in Kingston Jamaica and moved to Montreal Canada at age 16 after high school. My Jamaican roots are a corner stone in who I am today, my ideals and my values. Ive seen people from my country make a little bit of something go a very long way and at the end of the day what could be more sustainable than that. Having things that last.

What’s the story behind your business name?

Well I wanted to be very very intentional about the name. A lot of people have asked why didn’t I just make is short and sweet instead of such a long phrase but I opted not to and went with Personal Space Living instead. Personal – because that’s what I want each purchase to feel like to my customers. Space – because no matter how big or small our homes should be a place that gives us room to feel safe, thrive and grow. And Living – because that’s of personal space is for, not to be someone else but to express our truest more authentic selves.

What can we look forward to seeing in the next month from your business?
