Becoming a conscious consumer is a journey, and it’s natural to struggle to stick to the lifestyle. The capitalism culture is strong in the United States. I wanted to share with you all some tips to help you stay on track and make conscious choices part of your daily routine:
Start Small
Don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to change everything at once. Start by focusing on one or two areas, such as reducing single-use plastics or supporting ethical fashion brands. What’s been really powerful for me, is focusing on replacing one thing at a time and before I know it I’ve made real strides. That’s how I did it with supporting more Black-owned businesses.
Do Your Research
Take the time to learn about the companies and products you buy. Look for certifications like Fair Trade or B Corp, or read up on a brand’s environmental and social responsibility initiatives. If you don’t want to do the work, find free resources that have done the work for you like AYO Business Finder.
Plan Ahead
It’s easier to make conscious choices when you have a plan. Make a shopping list, bring your reusable bags and water bottles, and choose sustainable options when eating out. The more you think through your day, the better you can set yourself up for success. It’s even better when you find resources that help you in the future, like having the ability to save businesses to refer to for later as a feature on the Finder.
Find a Community
Connect with others who are on a similar journey. Join a Facebook group, attend a local eco-friendly event, or find a friend who shares your values.
Be Kind to Yourself
Remember that no one is perfect, and every conscious choice you make is a step in the right direction. Don’t beat yourself up if you slip up or make a less-than-ideal choice. Being kind to yourself will allow you to go the distance in this journey for years. The reality is you will be hit hard spots that will require you to forgive yourself and move forward.
Celebrate Successes
Celebrate the small victories and progress you make. It’s important to acknowledge and appreciate the positive impact you are making. It’s a good skill to develop of knowing how to celebrate the progress you make in your life, enjoying the journey. The journey last for much longer than the destination.
Remember, becoming a conscious consumer is a process. It’s okay to stumble and make mistakes, as long as you keep moving forward and making conscious choices whenever possible. With time and practice, it will become second nature and a rewarding part of your lifestyle.
